In 1852, abolitionist Frederick Douglass asked "What to the slave is the
4th of July?" in a speech condemning the celebration of freedom and
democracy in a country with violent, state-sanctioned bondage.
Norwich Public Library is sponsoring an online community reading of the
abridged speech on Monday, July 6, at 6:30 via zoom (link in website
below). There will be an opportunity for breakout discussion following the
